FOUR VINTAGE COLOR SOUVENIR PLATES - U.S. CAPITOL WASHINGTON D.C., UTAH, INDIANA THE HOOSIER STATE, WASHINGTON STATE A second grouping of four vintage souvenir plates, this one in full color rather than green transfer, so the two lots hang well together or split easily between buyers. Subjects are The Capitol, Washington, D.C. with a dense black and gold border of D.C. landmarks, Utah with the covered wagon, Mormon Temple on Temple Square, Great Salt Lake, Bingham Copper Mine, State Capitol, and the Great White Throne, Indiana, The Hoosier State, with the state flag, seal, cardinal, zinnia, Santa Claus Indiana, University of Notre Dame, George Rogers Clark Shrine, the largest steel mill, and Land of a 1000 Lakes, and Washington with Mount Rainier, Mt. St. Helens, Coulee Dam, the State Capitol at Olympia, the Seattle floating bridge, the U.S. Government locks, Seattle, and the Highway to Spokane, set inside a wide etched 22K gold border. Sizes run from roughly eight inches to roughly ten and a half inches. Only one plate carries a mark, reading Stokely China, Warranted 22K, and the other three backs photograph plain with no mark visible. These are classic mid-century roadside travel souvenirs, popular with state collectors, plate-wall decorators, and anyone building a display of the fifty states. Bidders should read the condition notes below, since one plate shows heavy overall crazing and the plates were examined only from photographs. Sold as a lot of four plates. Description The Capitol, Washington, D.C. - round plate, white body with a full-color center scene of the United States Capitol dome and west front with trees and dramatic clouds, captioned in script within the image The Capitol / Washington, D.C., surrounded by a wide dark border of scrolled cartouches enclosing D.C. landmark vignettes in black, green, gold, and orange, including the White House, the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, and other buildings. Gold rim line. The back photographed with this plate is plain white and glazed with no maker mark, backstamp, or lettering visible, so no maker is claimed. Measures approximately 10 inches in diameter per the tape-measure photograph. Utah - smaller round plate, white body with a color center design of a covered wagon lettered Utah in black Gothic script, the state seal with THE GREAT SEAL OF THE STATE OF UTAH, 1847, 1896 at top flanked by sego lily blossoms, and captioned vignettes reading "THIS IS THE PLACE", MORMON TEMPLE ON TEMPLE SQUARE, GREAT SALT LAKE, THE GREAT WHITE THRONE, BINGHAM COPPER MINE, and STATE CAPITOL. Gold rim line. The back photographed with this plate is plain white and glazed with no maker mark visible, and shows small dark pinhole specks in the glaze, so no maker is claimed. Measures approximately 8 to 8-1/2 inches in diameter per the tape-measure photograph.
