PORCELAIN FOOTED TEACUP AND SAUCER - AUGUST BIRTH FLOWER POPPY PATTERN WITH GOLD TRIM A pretty footed teacup and matching saucer decorated with a full band of red poppies, buds, and fine green and gold foliage on a bright white porcelain ground. This is a birth-month or flower-of-the-month style set: the inside of the cup is inscribed AUGUST in gold script inside a delicate gold scrollwork cartouche, making it a natural gift or display piece for an August birthday. The cup has a gently scalloped rim, a slim loop handle, and a pedestal foot, and both pieces are finished with gold trim at the rims and on the handle. Nice for a china cabinet, a tea-cup display shelf, a bridal or birthday gift, or actual tea service. Sold as a two-piece cup and saucer set. Description Footed teacup - scalloped flaring bowl on a short pedestal foot with a loop handle. Stands approximately 2-1/2" tall and measures approximately 3-3/4" across the rim per the tape-measure photographs. Saucer - round with a wide poppy-decorated rim and a plain white cup well, measuring approximately 5-1/2" in diameter per the tape-measure photograph. The tape is laid across and alongside the pieces rather than perfectly flat, so bidders should verify all dimensions from the photographs. Decoration is a dense wrap of red-orange poppies with black centers, buds, and yellow-green foliage on both cup and saucer, with gold banding at the cup rim, gold on the handle, and a gold line at the saucer edge. The cup interior carries the gold script inscription AUGUST within a gold scroll frame. Marks: the base of both cup and saucer carries a small printed black mark reading 1898 in script, set within a laurel spray and a ribbon banner. The wording inside the banner is very small and does not photograph legibly, so no maker name can be read. Attribution note Birth-flower and flower-of-the-month cups have been made by many firms, most famously the Royal Albert Flower of the Month series, which pairs the August poppy with a month name; this set is not Royal Albert and instead carries an unidentified 1898 laurel-and-banner mark of the kind used on later reproduction and giftware china. The white porcelain body, transfer decoration, and stamped gold suggest a decorative giftware set rather than an antique. In the photographs the porcelain is bright and clean, the poppy decoration is crisp with strong color, and no chips, cracks, or breaks are visible on either piece.
