FRANCISCAN DESERT ROSE TALL SALT AND PEPPER SHAKER SET - HAND-PAINTED CALIFORNIA EARTHENWARE A matched pair of tall Desert Rose shakers by Franciscan, the best-selling American dinnerware pattern ever produced. Each shaker has the graceful tapered form with a pinched, arched top, finished in warm ivory glaze with the pattern's hand-painted pink wild rose, green leaves, and embossed brown branch sweeping around the lower body. These are the taller table-size shakers rather than the small squat pair, and they make a handsome centerpiece for a country kitchen table, a hutch display, or an addition to an existing Desert Rose service. Sold as a set of two pieces. Description Two shakers, salt and pepper - tapered teardrop bodies rising to a pinched saddle-shaped top. One shaker is pierced with a single pour hole and the other with two holes, the usual Franciscan salt-and-pepper arrangement. Each stands approximately 6" tall per the tape-measure photograph, with a base of roughly 2-1/4" to 2-1/2". The tape stands behind the pieces in the photograph, so bidders should verify all dimensions from the photographs. Hand-painted decoration on both: a full open pink rose with yellow center, a bud, green leaves, and a molded branch-and-thorn band around the foot glazed in dark green and brown. Both are decorated on front and back. Marks: the undersides photograph with no printed backstamp visible. One base shows a faint hand-painted decorator number that reads approximately 2S. Both bases have the recessed, scalloped-edge foot typical of the pattern. Attribution note Desert Rose was introduced by Gladding, McBean & Co. under the Franciscan name in 1941 and remained in California production into the mid-1980s, after which the pattern was made overseas under Wedgwood with England or Portugal backstamps. Replacements, Ltd. lists the U.S.-backstamp line as running roughly 1941 to 1984, and Chinasearch lists a 6" tall salt and a 6" tall pepper among the pattern's accessory pieces, which matches this pair. The hand-painted decoration, embossed thorn-branch foot band, and body form are all consistent with documented Franciscan Desert Rose production. Identification is offered as the consignor's photo-based opinion and is not guaranteed; because no backstamp is visible, the exact era and country of manufacture cannot be confirmed. Bid on the item as pictured. Condition Used vintage condition, sold as-is. In the photographs the glaze is bright and glossy, the painted roses are strong with good color, and no chips, cracks, or breaks are visible. One shaker retains its original plug in the base while the other shaker's fill hole is open, so a replacement stopper will be needed for that piece. Light soil or age discoloration shows around the base recess of one shaker in the close-up photographs. Fine crazing and light shelf wear are common on Desert Rose and may be present but not visible at this photo scale. Areas to study closely are the thin arched top edges,
