The canvas is also inscribed by the artist on the stretcher and reverse. Artist Biography: Robert Ralph Carmichael (1935–1999) was one of Canada's foremost surrealist painters. Born in Ontario, he studied at the Ontario College of Art before establishing an international reputation for his meticulously rendered dreamlike compositions. His work blends realism with surreal imagery, often incorporating symbolic objects, architectural spaces, skies, drapery, and natural forms to create enigmatic narratives.Throughout his distinguished career, Carmichael exhibited extensively across Canada, Europe, and the United States. His paintings were represented by leading galleries, including Galerie Libre in Montréal and several major commercial galleries in Toronto and Vancouver.
