Artist: Robert Ralph Carmichael (1935–1999)Title: Drift Date: 1977 Medium: Polymer Acrylic on Canvas Signature: Signed lower right, Robert-Ralph Carmichael, dated 1977 Sight: 33.5" × 19.5" Frame: 39" × 25.5" An exceptional original acrylic on canvas by celebrated Canadian surrealist Robert Ralph Carmichael, titled "Drift." The composition presents a dreamlike still life featuring weathered driftwood resting before a billowing blue drapery and an open window overlooking clouds and a passing aircraft. Executed with Carmichael's signature precision and luminous realism, the painting masterfully juxtaposes natural forms with surreal spatial relationships to evoke themes of memory, isolation, and transcendence. The reverse retains the original Galerie Libre (Montréal) gallery label identifying the work as "Drift," painted in 1977, with the original retail price of $2,400, providing excellent provenance. The canvas is also inscribed by the artist on the stretcher and reverse. Artist Biography: Robert Ralph Carmichael (1935–1999) was one of Canada's foremost surrealist painters. Born in Ontario, he studied at the Ontario College of Art before establishing an international reputation for his meticulously rendered dreamlike compositions. His work blends realism with surreal imagery, often incorporating symbolic objects, architectural spaces, skies, drapery, and natural forms to create enigmatic narratives.Throughout his distinguished career, Carmichael exhibited extensively across Canada, Europe, and the United States. His paintings were represented by leading galleries, including Galerie Libre in Montréal and several major commercial galleries in Toronto and Vancouver. His works are held in numerous corporate, museum, and private collections throughout North America.Carmichael's paintings reveal the influence of European Surrealism while maintaining a uniquely Canadian sensibility. His precise technique, subtle lighting, and symbolic compositions have made him one of Canada's most recognizable realist-surrealist painters. Today, his work continues to enjoy strong collector demand, particularly paintings from the 1970s and 1980s.
