A charming large painted chalkware pig figure produced by Universal Statuary Corp., Chicago, dated 1934, as indicated by the impressed markings on the underside. The figure depicts a smiling seated pig with a glossy pink finish accented by black spots and cream highlights. The underside bears the impressed "UNIVERSAL STATUARY" mark along with the date 1934 and model number. Universal Statuary was a well-known Chicago manufacturer of plaster and chalkware novelty figures during the 1930s through the 1950s. Large animal figures such as this were commonly used as carnival prizes, advertising displays, and decorative pieces. Early dated examples from the 1930s are less frequently encountered than later production. Height: approximately 10.75 in.
