Conceived in 1954, this glazed white earthenware ceramic pitcher (Pichet Espagnol) showcases Pablo Picasso's inventive sculptural pottery produced in collaboration with the Madoura Pottery studio in Vallauris, France. Inspired by traditional Spanish terracotta vessels, the piece features an iconic bird-like silhouette with a high, central looped handle bridging a narrow forward-facing spout and a wide rear filling aperture. Decorated in black and light blue oxidized paraffin glazes over a smooth cream ground with fine incised (engobe) linear accents along the body. The design features stylized eye motifs framing the wide opening, rhythmic blue and black polka dots decorating the handle and sides, and flowing painted feathers along the tail and neck. The underside features an incised reserve in black enamel reading: EDITION PICASSO MADOURA Numbered in script: 150/300 Stamped with two impressed studio seals: EDITION PICASSO and MADOURA PLEIN FEU Height: 11.5 inches (29.2 cm) Length: 11 inches (27.9 cm) Weight: 1.25 kg (2.75 lbs)
