Conceived in 1952, this white earthenware ceramic pitcher (Cavalier et Cheval) features Pablo Picasso's characteristic playful narrative style executed in collaboration with the Madoura Pottery studio in Vallauris, France. The vessel’s unique asymmetrical form includes a high raised loop handle, an exaggerated pouring spout, and an open reservoir. Painted in black, blue, green, and brown oxidized paraffin glazes with engobe details. One side depicts a stylized black horse draped in a decorative blue harness and saddle, while the front spout showcases a standing knight figure (cavalier) holding a lance and a leather canteen. The reverse is painted with a green leafy tree, and blue brushstrokes accent the handle and sides. The underside bears the official studio markings: Hand-painted in black enamel: EDITION PICASSO Numbered in black script: 44/300 Stamped with two impressed Madoura studio seals: EDITION PICASSO and MADOURA PLEIN FEU Height: 9.5 inches (24.1 cm) Length: 7.5 inches (19.1 cm) Weight: 1 kg (2.2 lbs)
