A finely carved cream to pale butter colored brooch shaped as a full open rose with a spray of deeply undercut leaves trailing below. The rose is built up in many separate layers of petals that curl and overlap, with a tight bud spiraling at the center, and the leaves below are pierced clean through in several places so light passes behind them. The work is hand done and shows a level of undercutting that machine made pieces do not have. The back is left rough and hollowed following the carving, with a simple silver colored bar pin and safety catch fixed across it. The material has not been tested and Crawford Auction Service makes no representation as to what it is. It is offered strictly as a carved decorative brooch. Condition is very good with no cracks, chips, or losses seen to the petals or the pierced leaf work, and the surface carries a soft warm tone consistent with age. Carved floral brooches in this style were a staple of mid century estate jewelry boxes. Estimated Value: $25 to $45 based on comparable recent sales. Sold as-is.
