Unique selection of an antique piece of framed art, perfect for collecting and home display. This selection is entitled “Faust” and was produced by artist Louis Icart. This work dates back to 1928 and focuses on Johann Wolfgang von Goeth’s 16th century story, which is often considered the greatest work of German literature. In the story, Henrich Faust is a brilliant but disillusioned scholar who feels like he has exhausted all human knowledge without finding true meaning. He is then caught between a bet by Mephistopheles (The Devil) and God for the salvation of his soul as Mephistopheles begins to tempt Faust in his quest for true knowledge. Within the image of the displayed picture, the character Marguerite (Faust’s love interest) is displayed in a dramatic introspective pose. Little does she realize that the devilish Mephistopheles is looming nearby. The 1928 work was done in etching, drypoint, and watercolor, being one of only 500 copies produced. The piece has further identification marks in the form of the artist’s signature in the lower right-hand corner of the piece and a selection of small print situated on the top of the illustration on both sides. Louis Icart (1888-1950) was a prominent French painter and illustrator who became an iconic figure of the Art Deco movement. He is best known for his glamorous, sensuous, and often humorous etchings of women that “joie de vivre” (the joy of living) in the bubbly spirit of 1920’s Paris. He specifically specialized in “boudoir” art, intimate feminine scenes that weren’t necessarily scandalous but were rather often lighthearted and sensual. After World War I, Icart’s work became a visual antidote to the trauma of the trenches. Even in this scene portrayal from “Faust”, which is a story of heavy brevity, Marguerite is shown in her natural wholesome beauty. The picture is framed and under glass with the overall presentation measuring 36” H x 29.5” W. The interior print measures approx. 24.5” H x 17” W. Once again, the work showcases all the unique markings of authenticity such as the artist’s signature, but also the work comes with an official Certificate of Authenticity.
