ca. mid-late 18th century; Cherry raised-panel slide-lid box with evidence of old compass star and scroll painted decoration. The box is dovetail constructed with fine corner-bead molded accent to raised panel sliding lid. The box appears to have been originally finished with a dark walnut stain and then overpainted with a decorative design of a central compass star with corner fans and scratchwork scroll graining; 15 1/2" x 8" x 5 3/4"; [Provenance: ex-John Rogers]; Condition: Appears to have been a restoration cleaning attempt. Most of the painted surface is missing with old original stained finish still present. Left slide rail has crack at the dado.
