ca. 18th century with later "1852" date; Attributed to Alpine region, Germany or Swiss, paint decorated traveler's trunk is softwood mitered construction with steel banded corners and arched lid with scroll-cut decorative apron-boards on either side and early wrapped-joint strap hinges with bird's head cusps. The chest retains an old strap covered chest lock and face mounted wrought iron bail handles, red painted with German script painted ownership and location of "Hagen" with date of "1852". The trunk has interior right mounted till; 24 1/4" x 15" x 13 3/4"; Condition: Chest construction appears to be early-mid 18th century with a much later added paint.
