This hand-stitched needlework sampler is worked in colored threads on a woven linen ground. The design features a central religious hymn verse surrounded by stylized floral bouquets, baskets, and a geometric border. An embroideredinscription along the lower edge reads ELIZABETH Hird Aged 15 1842 in capital letters. The work is presented in a period wooden frame with a planked wood backing. The frame measures 20 x 20.5 inches.The linen ground shows heavy toning and a large circular liquid stain in the center-right portion of the field (photo 1).
