This hand-stitched needlework sampler is executed in silk or wool threads on a linen ground and features multiple horizontal registers of uppercase and lowercase alphabets and numerals. The bottom section displays a stylized green vinemotif and is worked with the inscription May 21 1822. The textile is housed in a wood frame with cream matting and retains an adhesive label for the Neville-Sargent Gallery on the reverse. Frame measures 17.25 x 22 inches.The linen ground shows uneven yellowing and scattered foxing across the entire surface (photo 1).
