Vintage Navajo-style sand art plaques, offered as a set of three and featuring traditional Southwestern imagery rendered in textured colored sand. The group includes two larger plaques depicting sacred plants and a smaller central plaque depicting a female figure. The handwritten notes preserved on the backs add particularly interesting provenance. The left plaque is identified as “Corn” with the notation, “This plant is a corn and is one of the four sacred plants. Has healing too,” attributed to Henry H. Begay. The right plaque is identified as “Squash” and similarly notes that it is “one of the four sacred plants” and has healing significance, also attributed to Henry H. Begay. The center plaque is handwritten “Holy girl representing Beauty” and initialed “L.A.T.” An old price sticker on the corn plaque appears to read “The Trading Post,” “5/75,” “83,” and “$15.00,” potentially indicating an older purchase or inventory notation. These handwritten labels and older markings have been left intact and are part of the history of the pieces. The plaques are constructed on pressed wood/particle-board type panels and show age-related wear, staining and discoloration to the backs, along with old tape, labels and hanging holes. The sand-art surfaces remain visually striking with earthy Southwestern colors. A distinctive vintage collection of Navajo Southwestern sand painting-style wall art with unusually nice surviving handwritten documentation. Set includes all 3 plaques shown.
