Dating to 1969 based on USAF specification markings, this vintage formal officer's white mess dress uniform ensemble was tailored for the U.S. Air Force by Shinbaum's in Montgomery, Alabama. In the U.S. Military, mess dress is the formal equivalent of civilian Black Tie or White Tie (tuxedo/tails) attire. It is worn exclusively for official, high-level formal evening events after retreat (5:00 PM / sunset). Constructed of a heavy-duty off-white white/cream fabric, the four-piece formal set includes a short mess jacket, formal pleated tuxedo shirt, black trousers, and a pair of silver-tone cuff links. The double-breasted style mess jacket features wide shawl lapels, a silver chain link front closure, silver-tone USAF seal buttons, link sleeve cuffs, and a full satin lining. Interior lining retains a woven retailer tag reading "Shinbaum's The Complete Store For Men, Montgomery, Ala." alongside USAF specification tags reading "USAF Certification No. MFJ-8-1-69", "AF Spec. ASNPC 63-5", and a stamped size of 37R. The accompanying white tuxedo shirt was manufactured by B.V.D. under their "Neva-Press" line in a 65% polyester and 35% cotton blend, featuring a pleated bib front, point collar, French cuffs, and a tag reading size 14½-34.The black formal trousers feature a high-rise waist at 34" with side satin piping stripe down the outer legs. Condition is consistent with age and light military formal use, showing light overall age-related off-white yellowing/soiling along the collar, cuffs, and front shirt bib, along with minor surface creasing from storage. The fabric weave, USAF buttons, chain closure, cuff links, and interior military specification labels remain fully intact and well-preserved. This example showcases authentic late 1960s United States Air Force formal military attire, offering strong display appeal and historic value for military uniform and militaria collectors.
