This U.S. Springfield Model 1873 “Trapdoor” rifle is a historically significant single-shot military arm chambered in .45-70 Government and represents one of the iconic service rifles of the American frontier era. This antique example has no visible serial number and features an approximately 32" barrel with a dark bore. The receiver is marked “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD / 1873” with the American eagle motif, while the breechblock is marked “MODEL 1873.” Period-style inspection cartouches are also visible on the wood stock. The rifle retains its traditional full-length walnut stock and military furniture, with the wood displaying honest age, handling wear, and some cracks. The metal surfaces exhibit an aged patina and wear appropriate for a firearm approaching a century and a half in age. Importantly, the trapdoor does not currently lock shut and this rifle will need work before attempting to operate or fire it. The Model 1873 became the standard U.S. Army service rifle during the Indian Wars era and is forever associated with the post-Civil War expansion of the American West. This is a genuine piece of American military history with tremendous display and collecting appeal. Please see photos. Springfield Armory 1873 Trapdoor .45-70 Gov't Percussion 32 Dark NSN Good
