Some wear consistent with age, use, and storage, including scuffs, surface marks, discoloration, and wear to the suede and soles. One shoe has a small visible mark on the upper. Metal hardware and sole fasteners have some oxidation and wear. Unmarked suede leather shoes with rustic, handmade-style construction and buckle-strap closures in a monk-strap style. An "8" is marked inside the tongue of one shoe and is believed to be a size marking, although the sizing system is unknown. Exterior length measures approximately 10-1/2" heel to toe. The soles appear to be made from repurposed rubber, possibly tire material, and are secured around the perimeter with numerous small nails or tacks. Geometric tread designs appear to have been hand-cut into the rubber. Exact maker and origin are unknown. The consignor traveled extensively throughout South America, including Brazil, and other items in this auction have been identified as originating from northeastern Brazil. Based on the collection history, construction, materials, and similarities to other regional items from the collection, these shoes are believed to have originated in northeastern Brazil. This attribution has not been independently confirmed. An unusual piece of South American folk-style footwear.
