rench Model 1866 Chassepot rifle bayonet dating to the late 19th century, featuring the distinctive recurved yataghan-form steel blade, ribbed brass grip, hooked steel quillon and muzzle ring. The spine bears the traditional French arsenal script inscription, and the bayonet retains numerous inspection and acceptance stamps along with serial number D 97542 on the crossguard. Accompanied by blackened steel scabbard. A classic French military bayonet developed for use with the Model 1866 Chassepot rifle and widely associated with the Franco-Prussian War era. Good antique condition with age-related wear, oxidation, pitting and patina to the blade and fittings; scabbard shows surface wear. Blade 22 1/2"; 27 1/2" overall.
