Ceramic | Anthropomorphic Portrait Vessel Striking sculptural portrait vessel from the Moche (Mochica) cultural tradition of ancient Peru, a civilization that flourished along Peru’s northern coast approximately 100–800 AD, more than a millennium before the rise of the Inca Empire. The vessel is dominated by an exceptionally expressive human face, modeled with wide staring eyes, a prominent nose, exposed teeth, and bold red facial markings. A richly decorated headdress frames the portrait, displaying geometric motifs in the characteristic cream, red, and earth-toned palette associated with the artistic traditions of Peru’s ancient North Coast. Rising dramatically above the head is the distinctive stirrup-spout, one of the most recognizable forms of ancient Peruvian ceramic design.
