Birds - Pre-Columbian Peru. Blackware Ceramic | Anthropomorphic and Avian Ceremonial Vessel Exceptional sculptural blackware vessel from the Moche (Mochica) cultural tradition of Peru's North Coast, a civilization that flourished approximately 100-800 AD, more than 1,200 years ago, and became renowned for producing some of the most sophisticated sculptural ceramics of the ancient Americas. The vessel presents a striking human effigy crowned and flanked by two prominently modeled birds, creating a powerful composition in which human and animal imagery merge into a single ceremonial form. The face is strongly modeled with almond-shaped eyes, a prominent nose, large ear ornaments and an enigmatic expression, while the birds extend dramatically from either side of the head. Behind the sculptural figure rises the distinctive stirrup handle and elongated tubular spout, one of the defining forms of ancient North Coast Peruvian ceramic production. Incised geometric motifs decorate the body and wings, contrasting beautifully against the vessel's deep black burnished surface. Birds occupied an important place in ancient Andean imagery and were frequently incorporated into ceremonial art in connection with the natural and symbolic worlds. Here, their symmetrical placement above the human figure gives the vessel an especially imposing and almost guardian-like presence. Provenance: Acquired in Moche, near Trujillo, Peru, an area historically at the heart of Moche civilization. Exact archaeological findspot unknown. Dimensions: Height: 25 cm (9.84 in) Width: 15 cm (5.91 in) Depth: 17 cm (6.69 in) Measurements are approximate. Curatorial Commentary: A particularly powerful and visually commanding sculptural vessel, distinguished by its deep black surface, monumental facial treatment and dramatic pair of birds. The combination of anthropomorphic imagery, avian symbolism and the iconic stirrup-spout form gives this piece exceptional presence from every viewing angle. An impressive statement piece for a collection of Moche, Andean or Pre-Columbian art.
