Luque (Peruvian, b. 1990) Contemporary Pucara Glazed Ceramic. Franklin Mamani Luque is a recognized ceramist from Pucara, Puno, and the son of master glazed-ceramic artist Aurelio Mamani. Introduced to clay and firing techniques from an early age, he has continued his family's ceramic legacy while developing a personal sculptural language informed by the traditions of southern Peru. This original ceramic horse is distinguished by its powerful silhouette and intense cobalt-blue glaze. The animal is modeled in a proud, forward-moving stance, with an arched neck, raised mane, articulated bridle, saddle, curled chest ornament, and carefully defined facial features. Its rounded body and elongated front legs create a striking balance between strength, movement, and sculptural elegance. The deep monochromatic glaze unifies the entire composition while allowing subtle variations in tone, surface texture, and reflected light to reveal the artist's modeling. The horse's ceremonial equipment and stylized proportions connect the work to the equestrian imagery of the Peruvian highlands, interpreted here through a contemporary and highly decorative vision. Although closely associated with the broader ceramic tradition of Pucara, this sculpture is best described as a glazed Pucara horse rather than a traditional Torito de Pucara. It demonstrates Franklin Mamani's ability to expand the regional ceramic vocabulary beyond the celebrated bull form while preserving the technical knowledge, visual strength, and expressive character of Puno's ceramic heritage. The traditional ceramic practices associated with Checca Pupuja and the works commonly known as Toritos de Pucara have been recognized as part of Peru's National Cultural Heritage. Works by the artist have previously been presented through auctions organized by the Museo de Arte de Lima (MALI). ARTIST Franklin Mamani Luque was born in Pucara, Puno, Peru, in 1990.
