Ceramic | Anthropomorphic Ceremonial Figure Distinctive sculptural huaco associated with the Moche culture, the ancient civilization that flourished along the northern coast of Peru approximately 100-800 AD and became internationally renowned for its sophisticated ceramic tradition and highly expressive sculptural vessels. The piece depicts a standing anthropomorphic figure carrying a large vessel on its back. The figure displays a prominent headdress, large ear ornaments, strongly modeled facial features, and finely incised geometric decoration across the body and vessel. The dark-toned ceramic surface, together with the stepped and geometric motifs, gives the piece a powerful sculptural presence. The vessel opening is incorporated directly into the composition, combining the human figure and container into a single three-dimensional form characteristic of ancient Andean ceramic traditions. The piece comes from a private collection on the northern coast of Peru and was acquired in the Moche region near Trujillo, historically one of the principal centers of Moche cultural development. Dimensions: Height: 19.1 cm (7 1/2 in) Width: 10.8 cm (4 1/4 in) Depth: 12.7 cm (5 in) Curatorial Commentary: A visually compelling example of Peruvian sculptural pottery, distinguished by its dark ceramic body, incised geometric ornamentation, expressive anthropomorphic figure, and integrated vessel form. Its strong sculptural character makes it an attractive display piece for collectors of Peruvian, Andean, and Pre-Columbian art.
