Richter "Cyanomyia Franciae" Hummingbird Lithograph – Framed, 37” x 24” Description Large framed ornithological print titled “Cyanomyia Franciae,” depicting three brilliantly colored hummingbirds among delicate pink blossoms and green foliage. The lower margin bears the period-style credits “J. Gould and H.C. Richter, del. et lith.” and “Hullmandel & Walton, Imp.” The image originates from John Gould’s celebrated A Monograph of the Trochilidae, or Family of Humming-Birds, published in London during the mid-19th century. Authentic plates were hand-colored lithographs produced by Gould and Henry Constantine Richter and printed by Hullmandel & Walton. Original sheets measure approximately 22” x 15”. Christie’s identifies this exact subject and publication??. Presented beneath glass with cream and burgundy matting in a gold-tone wooden frame. Overall framed size is approximately 37” x 24”. Visible condition includes scattered spotting and discoloration to the mat, surface wear and losses to the frame, and moisture staining on the rear backing. The print has not been removed from the frame; therefore, age, printing method and originality are not guaranteed. Value * If an authentic 1849–1861 hand-colored Gould lithograph: approximately $300–$700 at auction * Recommended auction estimate as currently framed and unverified: $150–$350 This one has a genuine chance of being a period Gould plate because the dimensions and printed credits are consistent, but it should be removed carefully by a professional framer to examine the complete paper, coloring and any plate or binding evidence before describing it as an original.
