Albert "Sonny" Bignar (b.1938) Jena, LA 6" long Coming from a call making family, Albert elevated his calls to pieces of wood working artistry. Though it wasn't until late in life that he began carving. In 1999 he made his first duck call with help from his friend James E. Yule (1922-2017), an iconic folk art call carver also from Jena, LA. Inspired by the checkering masters such as J.T. Beckhart, and the scene carvings by Charles Perdew, Bignar would incorporate many of those styles into his works - as well as the amazing folk interpretations of James Yule. This single reed call is covered in ornate checkering patterns within raised panels both on the insert and barrel. According to an except in Darren Fontenot's book, Louisiana Duck Calls, it is said Albert would rub the calls for hours with a shining cloth that he said would bring out the wood's natural oil, and so rendering the call complete. The call is marked AB on the barrel and comes with a custom AB bag. LA316 Condition: Excellent and original Provenance: Picone Family Collection
