KING AND HIS GUARDIAN.
L:18cm H:50cm This painted pottery heavenly king figurine of Tang Dynasty is molded in separate clay pieces and assembled on an integrated base, decorated with mineral pigments of red, green, blue and ochre. The heavenly king wears a tall spear-shaped crown, with glaring eyes, wide mouth and curly beard presenting an imposing fierce look. He is clad in bright light armor ornamented with cloud and dot patterns on breastplate, shoulder guards and skirt. One hand rests on his hip while the other clenches a fist for holding a weapon, one foot stepping firmly on a cowering demon and auspicious beast. The naked demon underfoot crawls in fear beside the tomb guardian beast. Heavenly king figurines are core burial wares for grand Tang tombs, derived from the Four Buddhist Guardian Kings. They symbolize suppressing evil spirits and protecting the deceased. The sculpture boasts powerful muscular tension and layered vivid painting, blending Buddhist statuary and folk pottery craft, serving as a representative relic of prosperous Tang funeral art and Buddhist culture
ALL PROPERTY IS SOLD AS IS, WHERE IS, WITH NO RETURNS OR CANCELLATIONS.

Additional photographs and condition reports may be provided upon request as a courtesy only.
