Weasel with Arctic Char Hand-Carved Stone Sculpture Artist: Peter Boy Itukalla (Peter Qumaluk Itukalla) Title: Weasel with Arctic Char Medium: Hand-carved black serpentine (soapstone) Date: 1989 Dimensions: Approximately 6"H × 11.5"L A finely carved Inuit sculpture depicting a weasel holding a freshly caught Arctic char. Executed in polished black serpentine, the composition captures the animal in a dynamic, alert stance with its mouth open in a dramatic display. The contrast between the smooth, flowing form of the animal and the finely incised scales of the fish demonstrates the artist's exceptional craftsmanship. Created in 1989, this sculpture exemplifies Peter Boy Itukalla's expressive approach to Arctic wildlife, combining naturalistic observation with the elegant, simplified forms characteristic of contemporary Inuit sculpture. Artist Biography Peter Boy Itukalla (Peter Qumaluk Itukalla, b. 1954) is an accomplished Inuit sculptor from Puvirnituq, Nunavik (Northern Quebec). Raised in one of the Arctic's most distinguished carving families, he learned the art of sculpture from an early age under the influence of his grandfather and other accomplished Inuit artists. His work is celebrated for its dynamic compositions depicting Arctic wildlife and traditional Inuit life, particularly bears, muskoxen, birds, seals, and other northern animals. Itukalla's sculptures have been exhibited internationally and are represented in numerous museum and private collections throughout Canada and abroad.
