Artist Biography Jean-Claude Roy (born 1948) is a French-born painter celebrated for his vibrant landscapes of Newfoundland, Labrador, rural France, and Atlantic Canada. Born in Rochefort-sur-Mer, France, he worked as a merchant marine electrician before emigrating to Newfoundland in 1971. Largely self-taught, Roy began exhibiting professionally in the early 1970s and quickly established a reputation for expressive landscapes characterized by bold palette-knife technique and luminous colour. He returned to France in 1982 but has continued to divide his time between France and Newfoundland, maintaining strong ties to Atlantic Canada. His paintings are held in numerous public and private collections throughout Canada, France, and the United States. In 2023, he was appointed to the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador in recognition of his artistic contributions.
