A charming floral still life depicting a bouquet of pink, white, and lavender chrysanthemums arranged in a richly glazed brown ceramic jug. Executed with soft impressionistic brushwork and a restrained palette, the composition exemplifies the artist's lifelong dedication to painting flowers directly from nature. A newspaper clipping affixed to the reverse identifies the artist as Miss Gertrude Euphemia ("Effie") Smith, a well-known Guelph, Ontario floral painter whose works were collected throughout Canada and the United States. Artist Biography Gertrude Euphemia "Effie" Smith (Canadian, active Guelph, Ontario; d. 1970s) was a respected Ontario painter best known for her floral still lifes. Born near Ottawa, she later settled in Guelph, where she became one of the city's most recognized artists. Inspired by her mother, herself an artist, Smith studied art in Hamilton and Chicago before devoting her career to floral painting. Smith insisted on painting only from fresh flowers, believing nature could not be improved upon. Her meticulous observations of colour and texture resulted in lush bouquets that became highly sought after by collectors. Throughout her career she also worked in watercolour, pastel, china decoration, and decorative arts, designing greeting cards and painted household objects.
