The image presents a naturalistic cluster of dark wine grapes with grapevine leaves, tendrils and cut stems, surrounded by a wide coordinated mat with hand-lined green, black and gold borders. The molded wood frame has a deep reddish-brown finish with dark accent lines. The lower center of the image is titled ~ VITIS VINIFERA ~. The lower left bears the printed artist credit ~ Carlos von Riefel pinx. ~, while the lower right bears the engraver credit ~ K. G. Lohse sculp. ~. Carlos von Riefel was an Austrian botanical artist who specialized in highly detailed studies of fruits and flowers. This grape composition has been documented as a 1940s offset lithograph engraved by K. G. Lohse. The original paper label attached to the backing identifies the framed work as a ~ TURNER WALL ACCESSORY ~ manufactured in the United States by Turner Manufacturing Company. The inventory strip reads ~ 3602 ~ B87 FRUITS ~ 3602 I ~. Turner Manufacturing Company of Chicago became one of the largest American producers of affordably priced framed prints, mirrors and other wall accessories during the mid-20th century. The company produced wall accessories primarily from the late 1940s through the 1970s, placing this Turner-framed example most plausibly within the 1950s or 1960s.
