7 > HOCKING GLASS GREEN SWIRL DEPRESSION PLATES

AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > Offered as a -7- plate set of green Depression glass luncheon plates, each measuring approximately 8 inches in diameter. Produced by the Hocking Glass Company in the SPIRAL pattern, circa 1928 to 1930, the design is also commonly referred to by collectors as Swirl or Spiral Green. Each plate features a completely smooth blank center well surrounded by a broad flange rim molded with tight, uniform diagonal ribs radiating outward in a continuous spiral. The pattern is formed primarily to the underside and remains clearly visible through the translucent green glass. The 8 inch size is generally identified as a luncheon plate and may also be used for salad, dessert or side servings. The brief production period, vivid green color and strongly molded spiral border make the pattern especially recognizable among early Depression era tableware. The Hocking Glass Company of Lancaster, Ohio, produced the line shortly before becoming part of Anchor Hocking. Many green examples from this period were made with small amounts of uranium oxide as a colorant and may fluoresce a bright neon green under ultraviolet light. These plates have not been tested under UV light, so uranium content is not guaranteed.
