Serial # NSN. .50 cal. center fire caliber single shot rifle with a 28-1/2” barrel. The bore is good, mostly clean with strong rifling with light fouling/corrosion in the grooves. The rifle has been altered; the barrel and the stock have been shortened and the rifle has only 2 barrel bands. It may or may not be an arsenal modification. The lock plate is marked Springfield Armory and is dated 1864. The breech block is marked 1866 over an eagle head. The hinge block is marked 140. The metal finish on the barrel is a blotchy brown patina with dings, scratches and patches of wear. It looks like it may have had a black finish at one time. The breech block has a brown/black patina. The lock plate, hammer, trigger guard and barrel bands are a cleaned brown/gray patina showing scattered light dings and scratches with scattered spots of older cleaned surface rust. The butt plate looks like it was cleaned by grinding and finished in black which has again worn. The plain walnut stock has been refinished and is in very good condition showing some remnant dings and scratches. There are no cartouches visible. The number 43 is stamped on the comb. Original front and rear sights. The action works fine. Includes the ramrod.
