Edward S. Curtis – “Acoma from the South,” 1904Portfolio from The North American IndianPhotogravure, image size approximately 11¼ × 15¼ inches (standard large folio plate size). This is one of Curtis’s most dramatic architectural landscapes: the ancient pueblo of Acoma (Sky City) perched atop its sheer sandstone mesa in western New Mexico. The multi-story adobe structures cluster densely along the cliff edge, their walls and rooftops rising against the bright sky while the steep rock face drops away into the open desert below. Curtis photographed Acoma extensively in 1904; this elevated southern view emphasizes the isolation, defensibility, and monumental presence of the mesa-top village.
