Edward S. Curtis – “A Corner of Zuñi” (Zuni), 1903Portfolio from The North American Indian, image size approximately 11¼ × 15¼ inches (standard large folio plate size). This is a classic architectural view of the multi-story adobe pueblo at Zuni (New Mexico). The composition shows tiered dwellings with flat roofs, wooden doors and small windows, projecting vigas, and the characteristic ladders used to access upper levels. A figure in dark clothing stands midway on a long ladder in the central courtyard area; other people appear at lower levels. The open desert landscape stretches into the background under a bright sky.Curtis photographed extensively at Zuni during his early Southwest work. This plate captures the dense, organic cluster of living architecture that defined the pueblo, emphasizing texture, light, and the everyday use of the built environment.
