Edward S. Curtis – “Washing Wheat – San Juan,” 1905 Portfolio from The North American IndianPhotogravure, image size approximately 11¼ × 15¼ inches (standard large folio plate size). Two San Juan (Ohkay Owingeh / Tewa) women work beside a stream or irrigation channel, using large shallow coiled baskets to wash or rinse wheat. One woman bends deeply into the water with a basket at her feet; the other holds a basket filled with grain. Additional baskets rest on the sandy bank. Lush vegetation lines the far side of the water. Curtis photographed this everyday food-preparation scene in 1905 during his work among the Rio Grande pueblos. It is a classic example of his documentation of Pueblo women’s labor and traditional basket technology.
