Basic stamp: Scott #279B — 2¢ Washington, Type IV, double-line watermark, perf 12 (issued beginning late 1897).Possible variety: Scott #279Bc — the rose carmine shade of the Type IV.Swedish Tiger lists the basic #279B as “Red (pink before May 1898)” and notes earlier printings in carmine and pink shades that carry a modest premium. It does not break out a separate “279Bc” page, but specialized catalogs (Scott Specialized) do recognize 279Bc as the rose carmine shade.Scott Catalog / specialized listings:#279B = ordinary red/carmine Type IV (very common).#279Bc = rose carmine shade (scarcer, especially in mint condition).Mint never-hinged examples of the true rose carmine have catalogued in the $275–$850 range depending on centering and certificates.
