Scott #219D — 1890 2¢ Washington, Lake (Small Banknote issue).This is the early printing of the 2¢ George Washington from the 1890–93 American Bank Note Company series (issued starting February 22, 1890). It is perforated 12, unwatermarked, and printed in lake (a deeper, darker/reddish-purple or brownish-red shade). The color drew complaints (it was considered unattractive and the ink tended to run when soaked), so it was quickly replaced by the brighter carmine shade, which is Scott #220.Your stamp matches the design, denomination (“TWO CENTS”), and overall appearance of the issue. The heavy black cancellation (appears to be a barred or grid-style cancel covering much of the portrait) makes precise shade judgment harder from the photo, but the deep red tone and the red ink flecks/transfer visible on the reverse are consistent with the lake ink of #219D rather than the later carmine.
