United States 3¢ Rose Washington grilled stamp from the 1861–1867 series, most likely Scott #65 (or grilled variety like #64 with "Z" grill). The "points down" grill (inverted orientation) is a noted characteristic in some examples.Key Identification DetailsDesign: George Washington profile facing left in oval, "U.S. POSTAGE" at top, "THREE CENTS" below.Grill: You measured ~11 × 14 mm with points down (inverted). This matches the Z grill (Scott #64) or grilled versions of #65. Grills were embossed to break paper fibers for better ink adhesion/cancellation prevention. Z grills are rare and desirable.Color: Rose/pinkish (typical for the issue; can vary with fading/ink).Perforation: Perf 12 (standard for this series). measurements and inverted points align with Z-grill characteristics on the 3¢ value. Common base #65 but grilled/Z-grill varieties are scarcer. Color, grill size, and orientation are diagnostic. Sound used #65 (common grilled): $50–$200+ depending on centering/cancel.Scarcer Z-grill (#64) or varieties with clear inverted grill: $500–$2,000+ (higher for certified, well-centered). Faulty or heavily canceled examples bring less.
