On February 27, 1996, the Los Angeles Kings traded “The Great One” to the Blues in exchange for three players and two draft selections. Despite joining the team late in the season, he produced eight goals and 13 assists for 21 points in only 18 regular-season games. He then led the Blues with 16 points in 13 playoff games, helping St. Louis defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs before facing the Detroit Red Wings in a memorable seven-game series. The Blues’ championship hopes ended in double overtime of Game 7 when Steve Yzerman scored one of the most celebrated goals in NHL playoff history. Gretzky departed St. Louis following the season and signed with the New York Rangers, making his tenure with the Blues one of the shortest—and most distinctive—stops of his legendary career.
