Artist: Lawrence Arthur Colley (L.A.C.) Panton (Canadian, 1894–1954) Title: Untitled (Cubist Landscape Study) Medium: Pencil on paper Image Size: 4 x 6 in. Frame Size: 8 x 10 in .Signature: Signed lower left, "L.A.C. Panton." An original pencil study by noted Canadian modernist Lawrence Arthur Colley (L.A.C.) Panton, executed in his distinctive geometric style. The drawing depicts an abstracted landscape, constructed with bold angular forms and overlaid with a proportional grid, suggesting it was prepared as a compositional study for a larger painting or print. The use of construction lines and simplified forms provides an interesting glimpse into Panton's creative process, revealing the careful planning behind his modernist compositions. Small preparatory sketches such as this are considerably scarcer than the artist's finished works and offer collectors a direct connection to his working methods. Artist Biography Lawrence Arthur Colley Panton (1894–1954) was an important Canadian painter, printmaker, muralist, and educator. Born in Toronto, he studied at the Ontario College of Art under J.W. Beatty and William Cruikshank before continuing his training at the Académie Julian in Paris. Panton became associated with Canada's early Modernist movement, producing landscapes, urban scenes, and abstract compositions distinguished by strong design and structural composition. He exhibited extensively with the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA), the Ontario Society of Artists (OSA), and the Canadian Group of Painters, and taught for many years at the Ontario College of Art. His works are represented in the collections of the Art Gallery of Ontario, the National Gallery of Canada, and numerous public and private collections across Canada.
