Artist: Yvonne McKague Housser, O.S.A., R.C.A. (Canadian, 1897–1996) Title: Untitled (Ontario Farmhouse with Industrial Stack) Medium: Ink and watercolour on paper Image Size: 6½ x 4 in. Frame Size: 11 x 9 in. Signature: Signed lower left. Provenance: Waddington's Auctioneers label verso (Lot 206), indicating prior sale through Canada's premier fine art auction house. A charming original ink and watercolour by celebrated Canadian modernist Yvonne McKague Housser, depicting a picturesque rural farmhouse with steeply pitched roof set against the silhouette of an industrial smokestack. Executed with fluid pen work and delicate transparent washes, the composition demonstrates Housser's remarkable ability to balance confident draftsmanship with spontaneous colour. Although modest in scale, the work possesses the freshness and immediacy of a plein-air sketch, with expressive ink lines defining the architecture while restrained washes of ochre, blue, and sienna enliven the composition. The juxtaposition of traditional rural architecture and industrial elements reflects Housser's enduring interest in the changing Canadian landscape. Artist Biography Yvonne McKague Housser (1897–1996) ranks among Canada's most important twentieth-century painters. A graduate and later instructor at the Ontario College of Art, she studied under J.E.H. MacDonald and Arthur Lismer and became closely associated with the Group of Seven. In 1933 she was a founding member of the Canadian Group of Painters alongside many of Canada's leading modernists. Housser was elected to both the Ontario Society of Artists (OSA) and the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA). Throughout a career spanning more than seventy years, she produced landscapes, northern scenes, urban views, and figure studies distinguished by bold colour, expressive design, and modernist sensibility. Her works are held in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, and numerous major museums and corporate collections. Her paintings and works on paper continue to perform strongly at leading Canadian auction houses including Waddington's and Cowley Abbott.
