Artist: Charles W. Dahlgreen (American, 1864–1955) Title: Across the River Medium: Original etching on paper Date: Early 20th century Plate No.: 143 (Smithsonian Charles W. Dahlgreen Fund) Sight Size: 5.5 × 7 in. Frame Size: 10.5 × 11.5 in. A finely executed original etching titled Across the River, depicting a tranquil wooded riverside landscape viewed through a natural frame of mature trees. Rich drypoint-like line work and subtle tonal effects demonstrate Dahlgreen's accomplished handling of atmospheric landscape subjects. The reverse bears the original Charles W. Dahlgreen Fund label issued by the Smithsonian Institution, identifying the work as Plate No. 143. Following Dahlgreen's gift of ninety-four etched and drypoint plates to the Smithsonian in 1945, authorized impressions were printed from the original plates to support the Institution's graphic arts collections. These Smithsonian-authorized impressions are desirable examples of twentieth-century American printmaking. Artist Biography: Charles W. Dahlgreen (1864–1955) was an American landscape painter, etcher, and educator born in Chicago. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and became an active member of the Art Students League of Chicago, the Chicago Society of Etchers, and numerous regional art organizations. Throughout his distinguished career he received awards at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition (1915), the Art Institute of Chicago, and other major exhibitions. His work is represented in the collections of the Smithsonian Institution, the Library of Congress, the New York Public Library, and numerous American museums. Today Dahlgreen is recognized as one of the accomplished Midwestern American etchers of the early twentieth century, celebrated for his sensitive interpretations of natural landscapes and waterways.
