Artist: After an early 17th-century Flemish engraver (published by Hendrik Hondius I, Dutch, 1573–1650) Title: Portrait of Emundus Dinterus (Edmond de Dynter) Medium: Copperplate engraving on laid paper Date: Published after 1610, from Hendrik Hondius' portrait series of learned men of the Low Countries. The portrait commemorates Edmond de Dynter (c.1370–1449), Brabant historian and secretary to the Dukes of Brabant. Sight Size: 7.5 × 5.5 in. Frame Size: 13 × 10.5 in. A finely executed early copperplate portrait engraving depicting Emundus (Edmond) Dinterus, the celebrated Brabant historian and secretary to the Dukes of Brabant. The portrait is accompanied by an engraved Latin inscription identifying the sitter as: "Emundus Dinterus, Brabantiae Historiographus..." The upper inscription records his death at Brussels in 1449, while the engraved verses below praise his contributions as historian of Brabant. The reverse bears the printed Latin text headed "PICTVRAE AMATORIBVS, ADMIRATORIBVSQ." and signed Henr. Hondius, identifying the engraving as originating from the portrait publications issued by the renowned Amsterdam publisher and engraver Hendrik Hondius I during the early seventeenth century. Examples from Hondius' portrait series are held in major institutional collections including the Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam) and the British Museum. Historical Note: Edmond (Emundus) de Dynter (c.1370–1449) served as secretary to the Dukes of Brabant and authored the influential Chronica Ducum Brabantiae, one of the principal historical chronicles of the Duchy of Brabant. His writings became an important source for later historians of the Burgundian Netherlands. Hendrik Hondius I (1573–1650) was among the foremost Dutch engravers and publishers of the Dutch Golden Age, renowned for producing portrait series of scholars, theologians, statesmen, and historical figures. His engravings are represented in major museum collections worldwide and remain desirable examples of early seventeenth-century Flemish and Dutch printmaking.
