Artist: Alfred Frederick William Hayward (Canadian/British, 1856–1939) Title: Portrait of Arthur Charles Hayward Medium: Watercolour on Ivory (or Portrait Miniature on Ivory, subject to applicable regulations) Subject: Arthur Charles Hayward (the artist's younger brother) Sight Size: 4 × 3 in. Frame Size: 9.5 × 8.5 in. A finely executed portrait miniature by noted Canadian-born artist Alfred Frederick William Hayward, depicting his younger brother Arthur Charles Hayward dressed in military attire. The reverse retains historical documentation identifying the sitter, greatly enhancing the work's provenance and historical interest. Born in Port Hope, Ontario, Hayward studied extensively in England after emigrating in 1875, training under Frederick Brown and attending the West London School of Art, the British Museum, and the Royal Academy Schools. Although he became internationally recognized for his refined floral paintings exhibited in Paris and London, portraiture formed an important part of his early career. This intimate family portrait represents a scarce surviving example of that formative period. The work is accompanied by a biographical reference mounted on the reverse, further supporting the attribution and family provenance. Artist Biography: Alfred Frederick William Hayward (1856–1939) was born in Port Hope, Ontario, before relocating to England in 1875 to pursue formal artistic training. He studied under Frederick Brown and attended the West London School of Art, the British Museum, and the Royal Academy Schools. Hayward initially established himself as a portrait painter before becoming widely admired for his highly refined floral still lifes, particularly white blossoms, which enjoyed considerable popularity in Paris. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Canadian Academy, and numerous international exhibitions. Examples of his work are represented in the National Gallery of Canada, and he is regarded as one of the notable Canadian-born artists who achieved international recognition during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
