Frame Size: 8.5 × 10.5 in. An attractive nineteenth-century hand-coloured steel engraving depicting Thirlmere (formerly Wythburn Water), Cumberland, one of England's celebrated Lake District views. The composition portrays cattle crossing a tranquil stream in the foreground with dramatic mountains and lake beyond, characteristic of the picturesque landscape engravings produced during the Romantic period. The print was drawn by George Pickering and finely engraved by William Le Petit, published by the renowned London firm Fisher, Son & Co. in 1833. Such engravings were issued as part of illustrated topographical publications documenting the scenic landscapes of Britain and remain popular with collectors of antique prints and English Lake District views. Artist Biography: George Pickering (1794–1857) was an English landscape painter and draughtsman best known for his picturesque views of the English Lake District. His drawings were widely reproduced by leading nineteenth-century publishers, helping to popularize Britain's scenic landscapes during the Romantic era. William Le Petit (1804–1896) was an accomplished English line and steel engraver whose work appeared in numerous illustrated books and topographical publications of the nineteenth century. His finely executed engravings after drawings by leading artists are represented in many important British illustrated works of the period.
