First edition in English of this important eighteenth-century work on naval medicine by Dutch physician Lewis (Louis) Rouppe, translated from the original Latin edition. Drawing upon his experience as a naval surgeon, Rouppe examines the diseases most commonly afflicting sailors during long voyages, including scurvy, dysentery, fevers, putrid disorders, ulcers, and the effects of climate, diet, sanitation, and shipboard conditions. The work also includes extensive statistical observations and practical recommendations for improving the health and survival of seamen, making it one of the earlier systematic studies of maritime medicine. Condition: Edges a bit worn, front endpaper with chip, some foxing, a few instances of marginal old water-staining, overall Good.
