A hand-thrown and hand-painted Japanese studio vase with a strong Mid-Century aesthetic. The thickly glazed stoneware vase has been decorated with a brilliant red peony with leaves and a bud. The mouth rim has an iron-brown glaze. The thick body glaze has a crackle and pin holes. You can see the potter's wheel rings on the neck. The cut foot shows the white paste and is unglazed. The base is glazed. There is a three-character mark in iron brown on the base. MEASUREMENTS 8" (20.3 cm) tall x 5 ½" (14.0 cm) diameter. Weighs 1 lb 8.8 oz (705 g) CONDITION The glazes are very clear and bright. There are some glaze frits on the mouth. There are two hairlines on the foot; one extends a very short distance into the base but the other doesn't extend beyond the foot ring. They may be from a concussion or part of the firing process.
