A decorative tea caddy from Canton China from the TACH HEE Tea Company. I love the elephant decoration on the lid. A wood box with lid has been covered in gesso and painted in a brown color. It was then hand painted and stamped with designs and text. The lid has a central elephant with flowers and trees around the edges. There are Chinese characters above the elephant. The company name is below the elephant. The sides are hand painted with a bird and flowering branches. The base and interior are painted black. There is in the interior a decorative tin for holding cylinders of tea. The cylinders are missing. There is a swivel brass latch that is in the shape of a yin yang symbol on the lid front. The lid has a pin type hinge. The words PRODUCED IN CANTON CHINA and TACH HEE & CO. are stamped on the lid. MEASUREMENTS 6 in (15.2 cm) wide x 4 ½ in (11.4 cm) deep x 4 1/4 in (10.8 cm) tall. Weighs 1 lb 1.0 oz. CONDITION There are gesso and paint losses on the edges and on the black paint on the inside and base. The latch has a broken tip. The lid has some wear and discoloration. An old tea caddy from Canton that will add to an aged, rich look to a room. It would also make a great addition to a tea or elephant collection. A beautiful piece with historical charm! Period: 1920s Origin: China Materials: Gesso/Wood Dimensions: 6"W × 4.5"D × 4.25"H
