A colorfully hand painted porcelain plate with an artistic central depiction of a farmer surrounded by bamboo. The molded plate has a scalloped edge, and its cavetto has been painted with panels alternating between stylized flower panels and garden scenes. The central medallion is of a farmer near bamboo with a cloud approaching. He wears a woven coat to ward off the rain. This central design is painted in underglaze blue. There are under glaze blue decorations around the base. A gilt line edges the mouth. The glaze is thick and very soft. The foot is shallow and rounded with a few pieces of grit fired on. The base is glazed. There is mark in the center of the base painted in under-glaze blue. MEASUREMENTS 8 ½ in (21.6 cm) diameter x 1 ½ in (3.8 cm) deep. Weighs 1 lb 0 oz. CONDITION There is a rim chip, but otherwise, there are no other breaks, chips, cracks or repairs. There are a couple of very small firing cracks that have been glazed on the inside above the well. There is also what appears to be a spur mark along the edge of the foot ring and a dark burn mark on the foot. Except for some losses to the gilding along the rim, the gilding and enamels are in very good condition. An artistic, hand painted, Japanese Imari plate to add to a collection or to decorate a room. Period: Late 19th Century Origin: Japan Materials: Porcelain Dimensions: 8.5"W × 1.5"D × 8.5"H
