Title: Four Slender Pines on a Coastal Bluff Above a Shimmering Bay Technique: Gouache on paper Measures: 16 x 13 inches (40.6 x 33.0 cm) Year: Undated Condition: Appears in generally good visual condition based on the photographs supplied, with bright, saturated coloration and densely applied, slightly raised dabs and strokes of paint across the entire surface. No significant tears, losses, or creases are apparent in the available images. Minor surface irregularities, light handling marks, and age-related wear may be present. Presented in a gold-toned frame with a stepped, rounded cove profile, showing minor surface wear. Not examined out of the frame. Condition is described from the photographs supplied. Provenance: Private collection, Madrid; private acquisition, New York Visual Description: A radiant coastal landscape in vertical format, in which four tall, slender pine trees rise from a steep, sunlit bluff at left and lean together over a glittering bay. Their sinuous trunks are traced in parallel bands of crimson, coral, teal, and emerald, and their crowns merge into a rounded canopy of dark green, olive, and amber dabs across the upper left. The bluff below is built from flame-like strokes of vermilion, orange, yellow, violet, and green that sweep down toward the water. To the right, the bay stretches to the horizon, its surface broken into hundreds of small, separate touches of cobalt, cerulean, white, yellow, orange, and green that convey dancing light. Three small boats with red and green hulls, one with a sail, float in the middle distance. Along the horizon, a chain of mountains in rose, mauve, and ochre is outlined in deep blue, beneath a luminous sky composed of dots of lemon, peach, pink, sky blue, and mint. The mosaic of pure, unmixed color, the vivid non-naturalistic palette, and the bold contours of the trees reflect the visual language of Fauvism and its roots in Neo-Impressionist divisionism. The lower left bears a painted inscription reading "a. Derain." This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
