Hand-Colored Theater Etching. An original mid-nineteenth-century hand-colored theatrical etching depicting McKean Buchanan as Othello in Othello. Othello imagery was especially popular in nineteenth-century theatrical portraiture, documenting the visual language of tragic roles. Dark-robed figure in a slate-blue, fur-trimmed tunic stands before pale columns and an evening seascape. The composition is presented on a cream paper sheet measuring 10 x 12 inches overall; image dimensions have not been provided. Reverse printed label clearly identifies McKean Buchanan as Othello. Visible condition: Light to moderate toning with a few margin spots; reverse label worn. Review all supplied photographs for paper margins, lettering and details. This is a period printed etching with hand-applied color rather than a one-of-a-kind painted portrait; individual impressions can vary in coloring.
